BASIC SHOOTING INSTRUCTION
Finally, the last and most advanced form of stickwork that a beginner should learn is how to shoot. Shooting is simply a harder form of throwing. If a player follows all of the fundamentals of throwing with one-hand, then he should be able to shoot fairly well. The beginning player should shoot overhand all the time. Just like passing, a right-handed player steps with his left foot, extends his arms away from his body, rotates his upper torso, and snaps his stick over with his wrists and arms. Beginners should learn to shoot for net. This means that they should pick spots in the goal and try to hit those spots. Too many coaches teach young players to always bounce the ball. This can become a bad habit as players learn to always shoot in the same place and learn not to shoot for accuracy. Also, in game situations, many bounce shots are directed right at the goalie’s feet, which is the easiest save for a goalie to make. Furthermore, it is good for a young player to be able to shoot all over. He should learn to hit the top corners, the pipes at around hip level, and the lower corners. This will help the player to become a well-rounded shooter.
